Vertical gardens, or “living paintings”, created with plants of different species, are designed to cover walls or entire building exteriors, or to create wonderful walls and living paintings indoors, using appropriate technology and plants which are suitable for the location. This is nothing to do with climbing plants: vertical gardens, now the responsibility of the specialist DellaValle&Arts team, are an innovative system of vegetal walls, which come from a sophisticated artistic and technological concept. In 2008, DellaValle Gardens began a journey of research, testing and execution of vertical gardens, devising two exclusive Made In Italy systems, Vegetal Grid for outdoors and Evo-Devo for indoors. Our vertical green walls are a marvel of both art and plant life, rewarding not only visually but also for our state of mind, returning walls and vertical indoor and outdoor surfaces to nature. Today, our vegetal walls are the pride of our company, a synthesis of a sense of respect and responsibility for nature. They are the expression of the human, ethical and aesthetic values that our company stands for.

QUALITY
NASA has, over a long period of time, carried out extensive scientific research into the capacity of plants to improve air quality. These studies have also been advanced by other prestigious research institutes: it has been found that some plants absorb pollutants and give us cleaner, oxygen-rich air even in internal spaces where air quality is often even worse than it is outside. In fact, living greenery absorbs the most insidious pollutants that are found in the home, in offices and other indoor environments, such as formaldehyde and substances emanating from central heating and air conditioning systems. The inclusion of green spaces, therefore, helps us to prevent and solve a number of physical ailments typical of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).

Plants have the capacity to contribute to our psychological and physical wellbeing thanks to their colours and energies that they transmit. Greenery brings peace, equilibrium and hope; the presence of plants near us has the power to reduce discomfort and stress and to improve our mood. Thanks to the patented innovative vertical garden systems, designed by Dellavalle Gardens, the creation of green spaces both indoors and outdoors without taking up floor space is possible by exploiting vertical surfaces. An idea that is not only aesthetically pleasing but that also offers all the precious beneficial and spiritual properties which nature can provide, bringing serenity, wellbeing and combating stress.

The green walls designed by Dellavalle Gardens have important environmental sustainability requirements. Vertical green spaces improve thermal insulation and drastically reduce energy consumption by developing a localised microclimate. Depending upon the height, orientation and position of surrounding buildings, the façade may suffer fluctuations in temperature (day/night and seasonal temperature range) and suffer constant exposure to the sun and wind. Between the façade and the vertical green wall, thanks to our applied technology, there is a layer of air that has a powerful insulating effect. The green façade is, therefore, synonymous with energy saving within a logic of ecofriendly architecture and better quality of life.

INSULATION
Thanks to our vertical gardens, even noise pollution is reduced, as green walls naturally diminish the reflection of sound in home, commercial and work environments, thus reducing the stress caused by irritating noises which penetrate the environments where we live and work. The vertical garden absorbs noises coming from outside that do not directly strike walls which therefore allows them to be perceived as lower in these internal spaces that are “protected” by the vertical green wall. Where both necessary and requested, we can, in the rear of the supporting structure, install special sound-absorbing panels that guarantee additional and effective sound insulation.

Dellavalle Gardens vertical systems are equipped with load-bearing or self-supporting metal structures suitable for any type of single- or double-faced wall surface, which are thoroughly researched and modified according to technical and environmental requirements. They include different types of plants which are selected according to the requirements of the client and according to the desired aesthetic/visual effect. Artificial lighting is provided if natural light is insufficient for the plants’ natural biological cycle of life and growth; the lighting also works to create spectacular night scenes. Dellavalle Gardens vertical systems are supplied with a remote-controlled fertigation system which automatically supplies the correct dosage of water and nutrients necessary for the healthy growth of the plants. The proposed weight of the structure and its thickness are carefully calculated based upon the location for which they are intended and we discuss with the client these specific demands in both the preliminary and working design. The system is supplied “ready”, complete with plants and cultivation technology installed by us to offer a spectacular immediate effect.

In a vertical garden, you can grow a vast selection of small plants (max 20-25cm high), preferably perennials and evergreens, to minimise the need for replacement of typical annual and short-cycle seasonal plants. Thanks to perennials and evergreens, your vertical garden will be in vegetation even during the winter months, without ever losing its aesthetic and botanic qualities. Preferred species of plants are those with low maintenance needs, requiring no pruning and little watering. There is a wide and varied selection to choose from: on Dellavalle Giardini vertical garden panels, you can have many different species, preferably ground-covering and with flat growth, including plants with both blooms and rich, aromatic fragrances, for a truly amazing scenic and multisensory effect.

The Dellavalle Gardens vertical vegetal system is completely remote controlled to ensure the optimal prosperity of the plants chosen for the installation. Our specialist technicians check the condition of the systems and the health of the plants by means of special sensors during installation. The control unit that governs our vertical gardens has been specially designed to meet all specific needs; it is a product that has been innovated and guaranteed by Dellavalle Gardens for checking indoor and outdoor vertical walls, whether closed or open loop. Among its features: 1) lighting control; 2) irrigation flow control; 3) fertiliser level/supply check; 4) registration of system errors and anomalies on the server; 5) the ability to create seasonal programmes for outdoor vertical gardens; 6) management and control of temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind and rain sensors; 7) control of up to a maximum of 16 irrigation and fertigation lines; 8) touch-screen display for easy and intuitive use.
MAINTENANCE

The maintenance of these gardens is very low but it is fundamental and should not be under-estimated. Dellavalle Gardens offers a tailored quarterly, semi-annual or annual maintenance plan which includes a survey by our specialist technician, cleaning and pruning of plants, any plant protection treatments, checking the cleanliness of the fertigation system and filters, the tidying up of any support fabric/felt that may be worn. The technician will also supply to the client’s gardener, or to the client themselves if they prefer to deal directly with “vertical” gardening in practice, all information necessary for routine maintenance and periodic checks. This technical training includes methods for: 1) periodic replacement of the fertiliser container; 2) cleaning of the vegetal panels; 3) any pruning maintenance and reorganisation of the plants; 4) detection of potential diseases in order to choose the correct products for treatment and prevention products.
